A Study of Shigellosis in Nothern Kyungpook Province


Abstract
99 cases of shigellosis were evaluated in clinical and bacteriological.
It seems to be vulnerable at age one to four years (83%6), and in late summer through early autumn (50%).
Clinical manifestations are muco-bloody or watery diarrhea (85%6), fever (62%), vomiting (30%) , abdominal pain (29%) , convulsion (26%o), and is complicated with toxic encephalopathy (15%).
Shigella flexneri is isolated predominantly (72%).
The rate of negative stool cultures after seven days¢¥ treatment (combined of rifampin and gentamycin) is 75%.
None of the isolated strains is resistant to rifampin, but high resistant to other antimicrobiological agents as follow: gentamycin (12%), kanamycin)16%) , colistin (16%) , cephalothin (3061), chloramphenicol(%), ampicillin (77%) , streptomycin (82%) and tetracycline (86%).
